Remember when President Barack Obama and Tiger Woods played a round of golf together back in 2013? I do. Obama went to Florida, played with Woods and got a lesson from Butch Harmon.
"I don't think either party was nervous," Obama said at the time. "He knew that I wasn't a big threat to his world ranking and I knew that I better keep my day job."
It seemed like a pretty cool outing for two of the most famous people on the planet. Apparently, it was also a costly outing for the duo, which played at a Florida resort.
According to the Washington Times, the trip cost $3.6 million mostly on account of all the vehicles needed to transport and protect the president.
The Government Accountability Office reported Wednesday that the departments of Defense and Homeland Security spent more than $3.6 million in travel costs and other expenses for Mr. Obama's getaway weekend with Mr. Woods and other golf partners at an exclusive resort in Florida.
The audit said the costs included operation of Air Force One, at about $200,000 per hour of flight, plus a virtual squadron of "supporting aircraft and U.S. Coast Guard small boats," as well as per diem and other travel expenses for an unspecified number of Pentagon and Homeland Security personnel required to support the president's golf weekend.
This price tag doesn't really seem out of the ordinary for the president traveling anywhere, but I guess it's more fun to say "nearly $4 million spent on Woods-Obama golf round" than it is to say "nearly $4 million is spent anytime the president goes anywhere."
When asked how he would describe Obama's golf game, Woods recently told Stephen Colbert that Obama is "straight."
