These past few weeks
certainly haven’t turned out like most people thought they would. Big time
names making a comeback in the game Like Charl Schwartzel making the 5 shot
comeback to win at the Valspar or Adam Scott winning two events in south
Florida, including a WGC. Who saw this coming? Not me.
Adam is adjusting to the
first year of the new ban on anchored putters, something which he has grown
accustomed to for years now. He made the switch because he wasn’t putting well
with the short putter and this stick was the only thing that held his game
down. We are not even through our first major yet and Adam Scott racked
up two straight wins - no one could have ever predicted.
My opinion on his
biggest issue wasn’t the short stick, it was the confidence in his
putting. Before he went to the broomstick he had no majors to having not
one but two majors and falling short of having three! I think it was the
pressure of having such high expectations at such an early age that he hadn’t
won anything big other than a Player’s that he got mentally locked up. This is
also coming from the guy that had to emerge while in the shadow of the Tiger
Woods era. Although that seems as a feat he tried to emulate Tiger - Scott
practiced like Tiger. He saw Tiger lifting weights so then Scott said I need to
lift weights too.
It’s never been that the
talent wasn’t there for Adam, it was just that the mental game wasn’t fully
there. Now that he has 2 majors essentially solidifying a Hall-of Fame
invite in the future, I think he can now let go and just play golf, which
he has. Look at his stats this year; 2 Wins and 2 Second place finishes in just
6 starts thus far. That’s a great year in itself, and major season is just
around the corner. So mentally, it goes to show, don’t put so much pressure on
yourself and think confidently, and if you really want to build your confidence
